» Joka: A new beginning for a mother and her handicapped son

Joka is a refugee from Croatia. She was accommodated at the collective refugee-center
in Nova Pazova in Serbia, together with her mentally handicapped son Milan (19). Milan is completely dependent on his mother. Joka's husband left them when they had to flee from Croatia in 1995.

Joka didn’t have some essential documents. In order to obtain these, she had to go to Croatia. However, because of the fact she didn't have these documents, she couldn’t go across the border. The local Microjustice Facilitator helped Joka to obtain these documents. She now has a birth-certificate and a Croatian citizenship-certificate for herself as well as for her son. Further, she obtained her marriage-certificate. With these documents Joka and Milan were able to apply for a piece of land of the municipality as well as for a small loan to build a house. Joka and Milan also applied for Serbian citizenship.

The municipality recently distributed land to Joka and also approved of the loan. With the help of the Microjustice Facilitator, Joka now is building a house where she and her son can start to build a new life.
