» Nemanja: Seeking justice for an elderly couple

Nemanja was born in Islam Grcki in the municipality of Benkovac, Croatia. During
the ‘Storm’ operation in 1995, he and his wife fled to Serbia. They are accommodated
in the Collective Center in Backi Petrovac, Kulpin.

Their son served in the Yugoslav Army (JNA) and was killed at the beginning of the war. Because of this, they were entitled to receive compensation or a family pension. However, they needed his death certificate from Croatia in order to be able to apply for the compensation. Since both of them are old and weak and did not have any possibility to travel to Croatia, they addressed the local Microjustice Facilitator for help. With this assistance, they obtained the death certificate of their son and applied for the compensation. As a result, they received the compensation they were entitled to and also receive the family pension. This gives them a modest but vital source of income.
